Morganton - High gas prices aren't going to stop a few recreational
vehicle owners from going on vacation this summer.
Bob Benner owns a Safari Trek, and has owned an RV for the past
15 years. He said current gas prices aren't stopping him and his
wife from using their RV.
In fact they just returned from Florida at the end of February.
Despite their continued use of the RV, Benner said they would use
it less if gas prices continue to rise.
Benner said it was more likely they would take shorter trips than
discontinue using their RV.
Benner's RV uses unleaded gas and gets about 8 to 10 mpg, but the
benefits of owning an RV outweigh the costs, Benner said.
Benefits include the comforts of a bed and kitchen as compared
to a tent, Benner said.
Benner has taken his RV as far as Alaska and Canada, but does not
have any current plans for an extended trip.
Wendy Carswell said the benefits of her RV are cooking her own
food, the comfortable bed and the overall savings on vacations.
Carswell, her husband and two children recently took a trip in
their RV to Disney World in Florida, and she said even with gas
prices, the cost of the trip was less than booking flights and a
hotel.
The Carswells own a 2003 Discovery diesel, and it costs about $150
to fill up the gas tank.
Carswell said her children, 11 and 5, enjoy the RV, and the family
has traveled throughout the South in the past 13 years.
The RV is especially useful for their annual trip to the beach
in June, where they stay for 30 days.
Carswell said the family has no plans to decrease the use of the
RV because of gas prices since they mostly travel in the region.
"I love my RV!" Carswell said.
